Time to "Do" Something

A few days ago as the waters rose, I went to help my sister sandbag her house. When received the call to take action, it felt like a race against time. There was an urgency within each of us to "do" something to protect her and her family's home from the water seeping in.

We stacked the bags tightly against each other as we built walls to shield her home. We wiggled the bags into just the right places to make the fit as snug as possible.

Can I just tell you how sore I am? There are muscles in my arms, legs, and back that are making themselves known for the first time in my life, I think. It was cold, it was definitely wet, it was muddy. Regardless of the pain, regardless of the inconvenience, I was glad to be able to help my sister and her husband do what needed to be done.

Sometimes we have to guard more than our homes from things that can destroy, sometimes we have to guard our hearts.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23

Just like the urgency my family and I felt to "do" something to prevent water from coming in and destroying my sister's home, we as believers should feel that sense of urgency to protect our hearts from things that can seep in and damage the place where the Holy Spirit lives within us.   We need to protect God's dwelling place.

Yet, sometimes we don't.

Sometimes we put down a few sandbags, but a few isn't always enough.

Sometimes we stack the sandbags, failing to pile them tightly together, leaving gaps in our wall.

Yes, packing spiritual sandbags might make us sore.  It may stretch us in places and demand more from us than we thought it would, but in the end, we will be so glad we protected our hearts, the very dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, from things that could seep in and damage.

Simply put, there are things we should not allow into our lives, and the choice is up to each one of us how high we stack our wall of sandbags.

What measures do you take to protect the Spirit's dwelling place in your life?
