The Smell of Dirt

I love the smell of dirt.

I do.

I know it's not exactly the most lady-like thing, but I can't help it.

It smells good to me.

It reminds me of home, as in my community, as well as home,as in home when I was a kid.

Since there were four little mouths to feed, Momma and Daddy always had a garden. I remember following behind Daddy one spring as he tilled up the spot for our garden when I was probably around six years old. He had his brown work boots on and I remember watching his feet as he took each step behind the tiller. To my little eyes it looked certain that he would fall on the unlevel upturned heaps of dirt. I remember watching him spread fertilizer, and watching Mom and Dad sprinkle the seeds one by one into just the right places in the rows.

The smell of freshly plowed dirt always takes me back. All around my home this week are fields of freshly plowed ground. When I stepped out onto my deck the other day, I was greeted with the scent of the earth exposed.

As I drove by a freshly plowed field several days ago, I didn't notice the field itself until I caught just a touch of that unmistakable smell of nature, and instead of it immediately taking me back to the garden with Mom and Dad, this time the scent took me immediately back to one of our first Godswords:

Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord until he comes and showers righteousness on you. Hosea 10:12

I was so thankful to have hidden that word in my heart. It provided an opportunity for God to remind me how sweet the fragrance of a freshly plowed heart is to Him.

I think He rejoices at that fragrance. He rejoices at opportunities to plant something new in the soil of my heart and watch it grow.

Just as I love memories of being in the garden with my momma and daddy, I also love to be a garden for my Father, offering myself as freshly tilled soil for His pleasure.

I'm pretty sure He has a green thumb, and that's a good thing 'cause with this case, He's sure going to need it!

  1. I love smells!!!! I have so many memories tied to smells. I never realized that until I was older. Honeysuckle has to top the list. Everytime I smell honeysuckle I'm taken back to a little field where me and my sisters used to play that was lined with honeysuckle. We would work forever just to get that one little drop in our mouths! Cake baking....memories of my mother, of course. Peppermint oil takes me back to making white choc. peppermint candy at Christmas. The smell of sawdust always takes me back to my Grandaddy's workshop.....What a wonderful sense that God has given us! Thanks for the post that took me down memory lane this morning :)
